Tottenham Hotspur has recently been associated with a potential move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Reports from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport linked Spurs with an interest in signing the England international.

Spurs are reportedly eyeing a midfielder due to the forthcoming absence of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma, who are set to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Moreover, uncertainty looms over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham as the January transfer window approaches.

While Hojbjerg’s potential departure seemed possible during the summer, he ultimately stayed at Spurs. However, he has struggled to secure significant playing time this season, and journalist Paul Brown recently indicated to GiveMeSport that Hojbjerg might have made a decision to leave the club.

Considering these circumstances, Phillips could be an attractive option for Tottenham. Fabrizio Romano also suggested that one of the potential competitors for Phillips is no longer in the running.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano indicated that Juventus, heavily linked with the 27-year-old, is not particularly keen on the player. Romano highlighted Juventus’ preference for an offensive midfielder on a cost-effective deal, suggesting they aren’t keen on defensive-minded players like Phillips.

Despite Phillips’ desire to establish himself at Manchester City, his limited playing time might prompt him to consider a move for regular first-team action, especially with Euro 2024 on the horizon.

Romano’s remarks hint that Tottenham’s pursuit of Phillips might face fewer obstacles with Juventus seemingly disinterested. However, there are other prominent clubs vying for the former Leeds United player, indicating that Spurs still have work to do to secure his services.
