Ange Postecoglou breaks the silence on his talented midfielders injury ahead of the AFCON

January 2, 2024

Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, who has been a standout performer under new manager Ange Postecoglou, has provided an update on the unfortunate injury he sustained just before his scheduled AFCON fixtures.

There is some optimism regarding Tottenham player Pape Matar Sarr’s injury, incurred while playing against Bournemouth. Despite the initial concern, it’s now believed that the injury may not be as severe as initially feared. The midfielder made a significant impact, scoring a goal in the opening ten minutes of the match, aiding Spurs in a strong start.

Postecoglou expressed his thoughts on Sarr’s injury, stating, “Pape felt his hamstring and he’s upset because he was eager to join his national team for the big tournament. It’s been reflective of our season so far. He was outstanding in the early stages of the game, beyond just scoring, and then he suffered an injury.”

Sarr was forced to exit the field prematurely after just 30 minutes of play during the match against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve. Despite his early goal, he was substituted just 20 minutes later.

The extent of Sarr’s involvement in the imminent African Cup of Nations now hangs in the balance. However, Tottenham also received a positive development as Rodrigo Bentancur returned to the team.

The 21-year-old player managed to secure his second goal of the season amidst the early pressure from Spurs. Demonstrating skill and precision, he adeptly maneuvered the ball to find space outside the Bournemouth area before unleashing a well-placed low strike. He was later substituted by Oliver Skipp, and his departure from the pitch was marked by visible emotions.

Our thoughts extend to Pape Matar Sarr for a swift recovery in order to participate in the upcoming AFCON games.

Sarr previously contributed to Senegal’s triumph in the 2021 AFCON, despite limited involvement due to his young age. He made an appearance in the semi-finals victory against Burkina Faso but was mainly utilized as a substitute. Since then, he has solidified his position as a consistent fixture in the lineup and was anticipated to assume a pivotal role for the team.
