In a revealing chat with talkSPORT, the former Tottenham goalkeeper opened up about his turbulent relationship with manager Harry Redknapp during their time together at White Hart Lane.

Having served as the club’s primary goalkeeper for three seasons, the Brazilian found himself displaced by Brad Friedel in 2011, leading to a heated confrontation with his manager. Recounting the pivotal moment on talkSPORT’s White & Jordan Show, he recalled, “I never had problems with managers apart from Harry – once!” Gomes explained how Redknapp had initially benched him in favor of Friedel but later expressed regret and sought to reinstate Gomes as the first choice. However, Gomes, harboring resentment, defiantly refused.

Reflecting on this impulsive decision, Gomes admitted, “My biggest mistake in football was that. I don’t want to play for you anymore.” Years later, during a charity event with Tottenham, Gomes seized the opportunity to apologize to Redknapp for his outburst, acknowledging his regret over the fallout.

Subsequently, Gomes saw limited action in the Premier League for Tottenham, eventually departing in 2014 to join Watford. His tenure at Tottenham was further complicated by the arrival of Hugo Lloris, which relegated Gomes to the third-choice position. Temporary spells at Hoffenheim and a return to Tottenham as a back-up preceded his eventual move to Watford, where he found success before retiring in 2020.

Now, at 42, Gomes reflects on his past, acknowledging the need for greater consideration in his actions. Despite the challenges he faced at Tottenham, he holds respect for Redknapp, characterizing him as “a great man,” further emphasizing the significance of his apology.
