As speculations swirl around West Ham’s alleged interest in Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn, confusion thickens regarding the purported deal.

Contradictory reports have flooded in, sparking rumors of yet another Amsterdam club talent being eyed by the London side.

Initial claims from the Netherlands hinted at a potential move orchestrated by West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, aiming to bring Bergwijn back to London after his lackluster spell at Spurs.

However, Bergwijn himself remained elusive when probed about the West Ham links, leaving fans pondering over the validity of the transfer rumors.

Renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano fueled the fire, affirming Bergwijn as a primary target for West Ham in the January transfer window. Sources in Holland and Sky Sports UK echoed this sentiment, suggesting discussions about both loan and permanent deals were underway between Ajax, the player, and the Hammers.

Contrarily, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg dismissed Bergwijn’s connection to West Ham as not being a ‘serious’ target, adding to the confusion among supporters.

Amidst the uncertainties, Ajax’s acting technical director, Kelvin de Lang, has stepped forward to shed light on the situation. De Lang, taking charge after Ajax sacked Sven Mislintat for selling Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus to West Ham, stated that West Ham hasn’t made contact regarding Bergwijn. He emphasized Ajax’s desire to retain their captain.

Although communication lines were open between West Ham and Ajax during Mislintat’s tenure, it appears the reported progress over the weekend regarding Bergwijn’s transfer might have been exaggerated, a common occurrence in the frenzy of the January window.

Bergwijn, the Dutch international, moved to Ajax in 2022 following a stint at Tottenham, where he scored eight goals in 83 appearances.
