Ange Postecoglou Makes Audacious Move for Former Pep Guardiola Protégé Linked with Celtic!

January 18, 2024

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou appears poised to revive his interest in acquiring Borussia Monchengladbach’s center-back Ko Itakura, a pursuit that began during his tenure at Celtic but didn’t come to fruition. The Japanese international, formerly part of Manchester City’s squad under Pep Guardiola, did not make any appearances for the Sky Blues during his three-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Following stints at FC Groningen and Schalke on loan, Itakura subsequently made a permanent move to Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2022, for a reported fee of approximately £4.3 million. His impactful performances at Borussia-Park have garnered significant attention, leading to him being honored as the club’s Player of the Month for August this season.

Reportedly, his impressive form has drawn interest from both Tottenham and Liverpool. Sky Sports Germany indicates that Itakura could potentially depart the German club in 2024, with Postecoglou monitoring the player after previously unsuccessful attempts to secure his services at Celtic in 2021 and 2022.

However, a prospective summer transfer might be more favorable for Tottenham, as Itakura’s release clause, valued at approximately £13 million, is expected to become active. Despite Tottenham recently acquiring Radu Dragusin from Genoa for £25.8 million, there remains a need for further defensive reinforcements at the core of their lineup.
