January 19, 2024

Sources have informed Football Insider that Tottenham Hotspur’s attempt to secure Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in January has fallen through.

In the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke disclosed that Chelsea have now decided to retain the England international for the rest of the season, despite discussions between the two clubs.

Tottenham is reportedly planning to pursue a deal for Gallagher in the summer, with manager Ange Postecoglou expressing a strong interest in acquiring the central midfielder.

An insider informed Football Insider that Gallagher’s future at Stamford Bridge is uncertain, potentially paving the way for Spurs to make a move in the summer. Chelsea would demand a substantial fee for the academy graduate, and any potential sale would significantly bolster their Financial Fair Play obligations.

Although Tottenham has already secured the permanent signing of Radu Dragusin from Genoa and brought in Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, they are still eager to bolster their ranks this month, with a central midfielder being their priority. Football Insider previously reported that Tottenham has Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City on their target list, with a loan fee expected to range between £5-6 million.

Currently positioned fifth in the Premier League table following a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, Tottenham will face Manchester City in the FA Cup on January 26. Meanwhile, Chelsea, positioned ninth after securing three consecutive victories, will challenge Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg on January 23.
