Celtic is reportedly ready to reject a bid from Atletico Madrid, the La Liga giants, for their star midfielder Matt O’Riley. According to Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid initiated the process by submitting a loan offer until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy in the summer. However, the Scottish Sun has now indicated that Celtic is poised to decline this approach.

The proposed bid includes an upfront payment for the loan fee, with additional payments that could reach up to £20 million. Yet, it seems the figure would have to be a record-breaking one to persuade Celtic to part with their prized asset, especially with the Scottish Premiership title race underway in full force during the January transfer window.

Matt O’Riley is contracted at Parkhead until 2027 and has displayed outstanding form this season, contributing 10 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, including the Champions League. His performances have garnered attention from various European clubs, with La Liga leaders Girona and Serie A side Inter Milan reportedly expressing interest.

Celtic’s manager, Brendan Rodgers, has affirmed his desire to retain the Danish international, expressing confidence that the 23-year-old will stay at least until the end of the season. The club is actively seeking new player signings, and any decision to part with first-team stars would depend on strengthening the squad.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone, is keen on reinforcing the midfield during this transfer window. The club has already secured a deal worth up to £23 million for Royal Antwerp star Arthur Vermeeren.
