Stefano Sensi’s dream transfer to Leicester City was on the brink of becoming a reality until negotiations between Inter Milan and the Championship front-runners, led by Enzo Maresca, hit a dead end, leaving the deal in tatters.
During the January transfer window, sources revealed to HITC Football that following Chelsea’s decision to recall Cesare Casadei from his stint at the King Power Stadium, Leicester were eager to fill the gap with someone of Sensi’s caliber. The Italian midfielder, celebrated for his role in Inter Milan’s Serie A triumph under Antonio Conte and valued at £22 million, quickly became Leicester’s top target, with Maresca openly expressing his admiration.
“I appreciate Stefano,” Maresca commented to Leicester Mercury. “He’s versatile and talented, though he’s not one of ours.”
Yet, the deal never materialized.
According to The Athletic, despite Sensi completing a medical and agreeing to terms after arriving in London, concerns about violating the EFL’s financial regulations led to the collapse of the transfer.
Sensi now faces a period of uncertainty at Inter Milan until the summer transfer window offers a new beginning.
Expressing disappointment, Sensi’s wife, Giulia, shared on Instagram (reported by Tuttomercatoweb), “We were mentally and physically prepared for this new chapter, excited about the prospects it held for Stefano and our family. The deal’s collapse, just a step away from completion due to disagreements between the clubs, has been a bitter pill to swallow.”
Highlighting Sensi’s dedication, she added, “It’s disheartening, knowing the effort and passion Stefano puts into his profession. Yet, we remain hopeful for a ‘special opportunity’ come June.”
The breakdown in negotiations wasn’t solely about Sensi. The Athletic also points out that Leicester’s inability to finalize terms for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s move to Brighton played a significant role in the saga. Nonetheless, Dewsbury-Hall’s impressive form might soften the blow for Leicester fans, as he continues to shine among a squad hitting their peak.
