Guardian reporter Jacob Steinberg has expressed his strong disapproval of West Ham United manager David Moyes’ tactical decision to substitute Lucas Paqueta with Ben Johnson in their recent Premier League match against Arsenal.
In the face-off that took place on Sunday (11 February), Johnson, typically a defender, was unexpectedly positioned on the wing, filling in for the injured star forward Paqueta. This move came as the Hammers faced a humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Gunners.
Steinberg vented his frustration on X, criticizing the team’s performance. “Shocking display by West Ham. Lacking energy, drive, and ambition. Ben Johnson falls short as a stand-in for Lucas Paqueta,” he commented.
Arsenal Dominates West Ham
Arsenal showcased their dominance in this London derby, with Mikel Arteta’s squad delivering an exceptional performance at the London Stadium. The match left spectators in awe as Arsenal secured a comfortable 4-0 lead by halftime, eventually extending it to 6-0 by the end of the game.
Goals from William Saliba, Bukayo Saka (who scored twice), Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, and ex-West Ham captain Declan Rice sealed the victory, emphasizing the gulf between the two teams on the day.
