The team has been stuck in a winless rut, stretching over eight matches across all competitions, effectively dashing any hopes of securing a spot in the Premier League’s top six.
Given the high-caliber talent at Moyes’ disposal, the subpar quality of football being played is indefensible. While Moyes managed to skate by when the team was winning, the recent downturn in results has left him with nowhere to hide. Names like Graham Potter have started to crop up as potential replacements, and if the dismal performances persist, Moyes’ days are numbered.
Despite the looming fixtures against Brentford and Everton, there’s a growing sentiment that if the recent reports are accurate, Moyes should be relieved of his duties immediately.
The core of the issue, as reported by Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian, is that some players are reportedly disillusioned with Moyes’ tactical approach. This revelation isn’t shocking, considering the squad’s quality demands a more aggressive game plan. Yet, Moyes continues to adopt a cautious strategy, which is far from satisfactory.
The consensus is that Moyes won’t be in charge by next season. His conservative style has proven to be a dead end, a lesson even the likes of Jose Mourinho have learned the hard way.
If Steinberg’s insights are correct, suggesting a rift between Moyes and some of his players, then there’s no time to waste. Moyes must go now. Allowing discontent to simmer could jeopardize the team’s morale and, subsequently, its performance.
West Ham still has a shot at glory in the Europa League and a strong finish in the Premier League. A timely change in leadership could very well salvage the season. However, hesitance to act could see the season dissolve into mediocrity.
