While goals have been hard to come by for Everton, their defensive solidity stands out as one of the league’s best. Despite the prevailing sense of doom surrounding the club, Everton boasts the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding just 33 goals. Furthermore, they rank fourth for expected goals against, trailing only Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
This defensive resilience could prove pivotal in the battle against relegation, especially when compared to the leaky defenses of the teams below them. Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton have all conceded significantly more goals, highlighting Everton’s defensive stability as a potential lifesaver.
However, Dyche acknowledges the frustration of their lackluster attacking output, stating, “I’m pleased with that side of things… The biggest challenge so far is transitioning into actual goals.” Despite this, Dyche praises his team’s defensive framework and their ability to defend from the front, a testament to their collective effort.
Key to Everton’s defensive strength is goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who leads the league with eight clean sheets, supported by a formidable center-back pairing of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite.
