Wayne Rooney, in reflecting on Everton’s recent troubles, pinpointed the club’s peculiar transfer strategy as a core issue, notably mentioning the acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson for a hefty £45 million in 2017. This move coincided with Rooney’s own return to Goodison Park, during a transfer window that left many scratching their heads at the club’s direction.
Rooney was taken aback by Everton’s decision to stockpile No.10s, with Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlasic joining for £24m and £8m respectively, despite Ross Barkley’s presence, who later departed for Chelsea.
Under Ronald Koeman’s management, Everton embarked on their most extravagant spending spree, fueled by Europa League qualification hopes. However, Koeman’s tenure was cut short by October 2017.
Rooney attributed the club’s present challenges to the flawed decisions made during this period, stating, “Some of the signings were a bit strange and I think they’re paying the price for that now. They aimed for ambition and European football, but it backfired.”
Currently, Everton faces repercussions for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability regulations, initially receiving a 10-point penalty, later reduced to six. This situation could worsen with further investigations looming.
Rooney expressed concern for the club’s widespread impact, empathizing with the fans, players, and especially the staff behind the scenes. “It’s been tough; the club has struggled with relegation battles and dissatisfaction towards the board is evident. Everton’s greatness is undeniable, and the hope is for a return to former glories,” he concluded.
