David Moyes expressed intense frustration after West Ham was not awarded a crucial penalty late in their match for the second time in just a week.
Despite managing to level the score at 2-2 against Burnley, thanks to goals from Lucas Paqueta and Danny Ings, Moyes believed West Ham deserved a chance to win the game from the penalty spot. This belief stemmed from an incident where Burnley’s Sander Berge appeared to handle the ball in the area.
This controversy followed closely on the heels of another contentious moment in their recent Europa League match against Freiburg, where a penalty decision also went against them. That decision has left the Hammers with a 1-0 deficit to try and reverse in the upcoming second leg of their Europa League tie.
Moyes criticized the decision involving Berge, highlighting the improbability of intentionally heading the ball onto one’s own arm. He argued that such an action would naturally result in a penalty due to the positioning of the arms.
Additionally, Moyes was displeased with the overall officiating by referee Darren England, mentioning a disallowed goal by Ings due to a marginal offside call and another instance where Jarrod Bowen was incorrectly flagged offside.
“We’ve faced several decisions today that simply did not go our way,” Moyes remarked, underscoring his belief that the officiating significantly impacted the match’s outcome.
