Keith Wyness, former Aberdeen chief, emphasized the importance for Celtic to pursue a “young, European manager” such as Roberto De Zerbi as a potential replacement for Brendan Rodgers.
In a recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old industry expert, who has held executive roles at Everton and Aston Villa, highlighted Celtic as a “progressive, forward-thinking club.” Despite Rodgers’ return to Celtic in 2023, the team’s performance in the Scottish Premiership has raised concerns, with Rangers now in a strong position to clinch the title.
Recent reports from Football Insider suggest that Celtic may be exploring options beyond Rodgers for a long-term managerial role. Wyness believes that looking beyond Scotland for a manager could be beneficial for Celtic’s future direction.
Wyness expressed his viewpoint on the podcast, stating, “I believe Celtic should consider recruiting a young, European manager. They have a reputation as a forward-looking club, and it would be in line with their ethos to make such a choice. Opting for a temporary solution might not align with their aspirations.”
Regarding potential candidates, Wyness suggested models like Roberto De Zerbi, who has gained recognition for his managerial success. De Zerbi, who transitioned from Sassuolo to Brighton in 2022, has attracted interest from top clubs following his achievements, including Europa League qualification with his former team.
Wyness concluded, “While winning the league this season may maintain the status quo with Rodgers at the helm, I believe Celtic’s long-term strategy should involve appointing a manager akin to De Zerbi. Identifying and considering such candidates could shape Celtic’s future success.”
