Leeds United had been unable to offer Archie Gray a longer contract earlier due to stringent regulations concerning players under 18, as reported by Phil Hay. The talented midfielder recently inked a fresh deal with the club in January, as per the official Leeds United website.
Gray, who predominantly played as a right-back this season, celebrated his 18th birthday on Tuesday (12 March), triggering the commencement of his extended contract, per Hay’s disclosure.
Phil Hay mentioned on The Square Ball (15 March), “It was finalized a while back, around two months ago, in January when he agreed to that extension. At that time, our understanding was that it would take effect upon his 18th birthday, securing his services until 2028.”
“Due to the strict regulations, players are limited in the length of professional contracts they can sign at 17, so they couldn’t offer Gray a lengthy extension as desired. However, his new deal extends his stay until 2028, a significant period over which he will be progressing well into his twenties.”
Under Daniel Farke, Leeds United has witnessed a remarkable resurgence, steering towards a potential return to the Premier League after last season’s relegation. Gray, among others, has excelled under Farke’s guidance, featuring prominently in various competitions despite his tender age.
