Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila is facing the axe at Club Brugge following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sint-Truiden over the weekend.
Amid increasing pressure, reports out of Belgium indicate that Club Brugge’s leadership, spearheaded by chairman Bart Verhaeghe, has made the decision to relieve Deila of his duties. Deila joined Club Brugge just last summer in a controversial move from Jupiler Pro League rivals Standard Liege.
However, things have taken a turn for the worse for the 48-year-old, who previously secured two Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic. Club Brugge finished a substantial 19 points behind Union St Gilloise in the regular Belgian season, although they are still competing in the Europa Conference League quarterfinals against Greek side PAOK. Despite this, it seems Deila’s fate is sealed, with Belgian media outlet Nieuwsblad forecasting his imminent dismissal, and reports suggesting that Club Brugge youth academy coach Nicky Hayen is being considered as an interim replacement.
During the match against Sint-Truiden, Club Brugge initially took the lead courtesy of Spanish player Ferran Jutgla, but American forward Kahveh Zahiroleslam equalized before Aboubakary Koita secured the victory for Sint-Truiden. Reflecting on the disappointing outcome, Deila remarked, “We performed really well in the first half. We were the stronger team, created chances, and even scored a goal. We could have capitalized more on our opportunities. There was that penalty incident, which might have altered the game’s course.”
