Keith Jackson commended John Beaton’s handling of the Glasgow Derby despite overturning three crucial decisions following VAR reviews.

Making three significant errors in a 90-minute game is a glaring statistic, leading to questions about Beaton’s competence throughout the match had it not been for VAR’s interventions.

In his commentary for the Daily Record, Jackson highlighted the challenging circumstances Beaton faced as the focal point of the tumultuous derby. Despite immense pressure, Beaton managed to preserve his professional standing, thanks to his decisive calls at critical junctures and the assistance provided by VAR operator Nick Walsh.

Working together, Beaton and Walsh were tasked with making three pivotal decisions, each of which was meticulously scrutinized.

Early on in the game, Beaton failed to spot Connor Goldson’s use of the elbow to divert a cross away from Liam Scales. Walsh, operating from the VAR bunker, correctly signaled the contact, leading to a penalty after initially cautioning Fabio Silva for simulation.

Another controversial point arose when Tom Lawrence fouled Tomoki Iwata in the buildup to a disallowed goal by Cyriel Dessers. Following the celebrations, a VAR review was initiated, resulting in the goal being overturned in favor of a free kick to Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers, returning to the touchline after a ban, had previously criticized Beaton’s capabilities during last month’s VAR incident in the Hearts defeat.

At Ibrox, despite Celtic holding just 46% possession, they were on the receiving end of 23 fouls, with only four awarded in their favor. Additionally, four Celtic players received bookings, while no players from the home team were penalized.
