Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey expressed strong criticism towards the PGMOL, calling their decision-making “stupid” following a controversial incident in the match between Wolves and West Ham. Halsey argued that while officials may know the rules of the game, they lack an understanding of the essence of football itself, citing this particular call as evidence.

Halsey pointed out that in his view, the disallowed Wolves goal was perfectly valid, emphasizing that the offside player did not impede the goalkeeper’s vision or interfere with play. He further argued that even without VAR intervention, the outcome would not have changed as the goalkeeper had a clear view of the ball and would not have stopped the header.

During a live appearance on talkSPORT, Halsey expressed frustration, stating, “It’s all about comprehending the game of football. There was nothing wrong with that goal for Wolves on Saturday. Being in an offside position doesn’t automatically constitute an offence unless you impact play or hinder the goalkeeper, which, in this case, did not happen.”

He criticized the involvement of VAR in overturning the goal, highlighting the discrepancy between the footballing community’s view and the PGMOL’s explanation for the decision. Halsey stressed that when the vast majority agrees that a goal should stand, the legitimacy of decisions by officiating bodies comes into question.
