Celtic have reached out to the Scottish Football Association, expressing their concerns about the use of VAR and the penalty decisions made during the recent 3-3 draw with Rangers at Ibrox.

Referee John Beaton was prompted to review the incidents on the field three times by VAR official Nick Walsh. The penalties awarded to both teams and the disallowed Rangers goal were the focal points of Celtic’s grievances.

Of particular contention was the penalty given to Rangers, where Fabio Silva was initially penalized for diving before it was overturned, leading to a spot-kick awarded against Alistair Johnston of Celtic. This decision, which allowed James Tavernier to convert the penalty, drastically changed the course of the game as Rangers made a comeback from being 2-0 down at halftime.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about a VAR review that disallowed a Cyriel Dessers goal for Celtic, while late goals by both teams ultimately led to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The match was marred by off-field incidents involving objects being thrown at staff and a bottle aimed at Matt O’Riley of Celtic during goal celebrations.

In response to these events, Celtic has officially contacted the SFA seeking clarity on the penalty decision, questioning whether crucial angles were missed in the VAR footage shown to referee Beaton.

Celtic’s ongoing discussions with the SFA on the VAR process have been a part of wider efforts to enhance standards across Scottish football. Additionally, manager Brendan Rodgers has voiced his support of the initial decision to book Silva for diving, emphasizing the importance of fair play and accurate officiating in the game.
