In the aftermath of the match, Celtic has called for clarity from the SFA regarding the sequence of events that transpired when John Beaton first cautioned Rangers’ Fabio Silva for simulation, only for VAR to prompt the referee to re-evaluate the incident on the pitchside monitor.

The turning point came when Beaton, upon review, awarded a penalty as video evidence revealed contact between Celtic’s Alistair Johnston and Silva’s knee. Despite this ruling, Stewart remained skeptical about the extent of the contact, delivering a scathing critique on BBC’s Sportscene and later expressing his dismay on social media, suggesting that the officiating had severely affected the outcome of a pivotal match in the season.

Unwilling to drop the issue, Stewart has continued to scrutinize the incident, contending that a minimal deflection off Johnston’s foot should not absolve him of responsibility for the contact in the penalty area. Reflecting on the situation, he questioned whether the match officials missed the crucial touch of the ball, leaving them blind to the full picture of the event. Stewart even had to demonstrate the interaction to someone who had overlooked the initial contact, highlighting the contentious nature of the decision.
