Aberdeen FC has launched a scathing critique of the implementation of VAR in Scottish football following a recent encounter with the SFA. Despite enduring a challenging season, the club has been troubled by a series of contentious decisions, including the late disallowed goal against Duk in the League Cup Final, a handball incident at Ibrox, and penalty calls in the Hibs game.

The club’s discontent came to a head after Bojan Miovski’s goal was controversially disallowed in the dying moments of their match against Livingston. In a statement published on their official website, Aberdeen questioned the reliability of VAR in Scotland, taking a direct swipe at the technology.

Aberdeen FC felt compelled to communicate with their fans after the disappointing 0-0 draw with Livingston, where Miovski’s late goal was overturned by VAR. Despite maintaining relative silence on VAR in the past, the club highlighted their frustration over recent decisions and the need for improvement.

Following a meeting with the Scottish FA, where they were presented with transcripts related to the disallowed goal, Aberdeen learned that the Hawkeye system malfunctioned, rendering the VARs unable to make accurate offside calls. The Scottish FA acknowledged the failure and initiated an investigation into the technical glitch.

The VAR officials resorted to freeze frames to determine the offside position of Angus MacDonald during the free kick that led to the goal. However, due to technical limitations, they couldn’t conclusively discern the position of Livingston midfielder Daniel McKay’s body. The club expressed their disappointment at the lack of clarity and called for improvements in the VAR protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
