Alan Hutton has pointed to a key factor behind John Beaton awarding Rangers a penalty against Celtic, suggesting that the introduction of VAR may have sparked doubt in the referee’s mind.

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the Alistair Johnston challenge on Wolves loanee Fabio Silva, where referee Beaton initially booked the Rangers player for simulation. After consulting the VAR monitor, Beaton reversed his decision and awarded a penalty.

James Tavernier converted the penalty to make it 3-3 in the derby. Celtic currently lead the Premiership by a point, although Rangers have a game in hand against Dundee. Former Rangers right-back Hutton empathized with Johnston, believing Beaton’s initial call was correct.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said, “I empathize with Alistair Johnston. Considering I used to play as a full-back, I am inclined to view situations from that perspective. While my allegiance lies with Rangers, I strive to assess situations objectively. In my view, Johnston did make contact with the ball, indicating his defensive intent.

I did not perceive it as a penalty. I believe Beaton made the right decision initially. However, when asked to review the footage, it is natural to second-guess oneself. Upon closer inspection of Johnston’s leg, it is evident he first makes contact with the ball before his leg collides with Silva’s thigh.

“That appears to be the main reason for Beaton awarding the penalty—evidently reacting to the visible contact. Throughout the game, Fabio Silva displayed a tendency to go down easily, which could have been frustrating. Ultimately, Johnston may feel unfortunate as he did manage to make a clean touch on the ball.”
