Neil McCann believes that a critical foul committed by Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers against Aberdeen should have resulted in a penalty kick being awarded. The former Rangers player is of the opinion that referee Don Robertson made an error by calling for a contentious incident involving the Hoops defender during the Scottish Cup semi-final.

In the crucial moment, the Celtic defender attempted a clearance in his own penalty area while under pressure, but inadvertently caught Junior Hoilett’s leg instead. Robertson’s whistle blew, prompting cheers from the Aberdeen fans at the national stadium. However, the referee ultimately awarded a foul against Hoilett for an earlier infringement on Alistair Johnston in the lead-up to the play.

Despite the VAR team supporting the referee’s decision regarding the foul on the Celtic full-back, McCann is puzzled and believes that Peter Leven’s team should have been granted a penalty opportunity in the thrilling 3-3 match. When asked about the incident on BBC Sportscene, McCann expressed his disagreement: “I don’t believe it was a foul on Johnston. It appeared to be a fair challenge between two players. While I understand the referee’s perspective, I personally see it as a clear penalty if the play had continued.”

McCann further questioned the timing of Robertson’s decision-making process, stating, “It’s perplexing to me why it took Don Robertson so long to determine the nature of the foul. In situations like these, referees usually act quickly to maintain the flow of the game. If he deemed it a foul, he should have indicated it immediately. I simply did not agree with his call.”
