Outrageous! Wesley Sneijder mercilessly attacks Manchester United ace for mocking Coventry City players

April 28, 2024

Former Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder has expressed strong disapproval of Antony’s behavior towards Coventry City’s players, suggesting that the young winger should feel ashamed for his actions. Sneijder, who has been critical of Antony’s taunting gesture after Manchester United’s victory over Coventry City, emphasized that such behavior was uncalled for and called for a heavy defeat for the Red Devils in the upcoming FA Cup final as a consequence.

In the aftermath of United’s triumph over Coventry City in a penalty shootout to secure their spot in the FA Cup final, Antony’s provocative gesture was addressed by his manager, Erik ten Hag, who cited provocation as the reason behind the incident. Nonetheless, Sneijder was quick to condemn Antony’s actions, admitting that the young player should have shown more sportsmanship by walking off the pitch instead of engaging in taunting behavior.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport via Goal, the former Inter Milan and Ajax midfielder stated, “Antony should be feeling utterly ashamed of his actions. Rather than provoking the opposition, he should have displayed greater respect for the game. I genuinely wish Manchester United a 5-0 defeat in the final as a consequence of his behavior.”

Critics have suggested that Sneijder’s commentary may stem from his own unfulfilled aspirations of playing for Manchester United during his career. Despite the backlash directed towards Antony, the Brazilian winger continued to feature in United’s subsequent match against Sheffield United, where the Red Devils emerged victorious with a 4-2 win. The repercussions of Antony’s actions remain to be seen as United prepare to face Burnley in their upcoming fixture this Saturday.
