Journalist Alan Nixon has unveiled through his exclusive Patreon insights that the Tractor Boys are contemplating offering their top goalkeeper a lucrative multi-year contract before he departs on a free transfer at the conclusion of his current deal this summer.
The 33-year-old shot-stopper has proved to be a vital presence for Town this season, displacing the previous season’s number one, Christian Walton, who has played second fiddle to the former Salford City keeper during the ongoing 23/24 campaign.
Henry, an Ipswich supporter and football pundit for Football League World, has offered his perspective on the potential extension for the Czech goalkeeper.
Expressing his views to FLW, Henry remarked, “He’s bailed us out in numerous matches, albeit at times costing us valuable points. I believe that this season, he’s rescued us more times than he’s erred for sure.
“His capability with the ball at his feet has notably improved over time. While there are some doubts regarding his long-range shot-stopping and his preference to clear the ball rather than catch it, he has shown glimpses of his talent.
“Although there have been instances like the goals conceded against Hull City and Coventry City where some might argue he could have done better, his exceptional saves, such as the one in the first half against Hull and the remarkable stop against Coventry from close range, demonstrate his quality.
“He possesses quick reflexes and commendable distribution skills. Surprisingly, his aerial command has not been widely criticized, which was initially considered a weak point when he first joined.
“Walton may excel in the air, but his passing doesn’t quite match up to Hladky’s standards.
“Should we secure promotion, I believe he could serve as a reliable backup, with the club likely seeking another goalkeeper. Nevertheless, I sense that McKenna has faith in him, positioning him as the initial choice and evaluating his performance accordingly.
“This decision poses a challenge. Should we remain in the Championship for another term, he certainly warrants a place. His quality is more than sufficient for Championship football.
“I anticipate his positional awareness alongside the center-backs will improve, while he needs to enhance his confidence in shot-stopping by effectively claiming and redirecting the ball.
“Indeed, he possesses the potential to begin matches in the Premier League. However, my stance might shift after a few games. A three-year contract seems viable.”
Drawing inspiration from Luton Town’s goalkeeping situation, Henry noted, “Two examples from last season’s promoted teams involved changes in goalkeepers from their promotion-winning campaign.
“Luton had Ethan Horvath, now on loan at Cardiff City, as their first-choice for the 22/23 season, but opted to secure the services of Thomas Kaminski from Blackburn Rovers in the subsequent summer.”
Similarly to Burnley’s acquisition of James Trafford from Manchester City, who played a key role in getting Bolton Wanderers to the play-offs, The Hatters opted for a surprising change that has proven successful. Despite Kaminski not being Blackburn’s initial starting goalkeeper upon signing, he has turned out to be a shrewd addition for them. Even with a struggle in defense, the Czech goalkeeper has managed to secure a significant number of clean sheets.
Although Hladky hasn’t been the standout performer in his role this season, his ability to keep clean sheets showcases his potential as a valuable asset for the team. With Ipswich potentially eyeing a move for a new goalkeeper in the upcoming summer transfer window, the decision to retain Hladky could prove fruitful if given the chance. It will be interesting to see if Ipswich explores options for goalkeepers as they pursue promotion to the top flight.
