Fizzing Kris Boyd has vehemently called for the public disclosure of the individuals participating in the independent VAR reviews to enhance transparency.
The Rangers icon found himself in the pundit’s hot seat on Sky Sports during Gers’ 4-1 victory against Kilmarnock at Ibrox over the weekend. Despite the seemingly straightforward win, the early proceedings were overshadowed by referee David Dickinson and VAR, who were instrumental in crucial penalty decisions and a contentious red card against Joe Wright for a handball on the goal line. This marked another eventful day in the realm of technology following the recent review report that highlighted several “errors.”
Boyd criticized the lack of openness surrounding the identities of the review panel members and emphasized the need for them to step into the spotlight just as he and fellow analysts do every weekend.
Expressing his frustration, Boyd questioned, “Why the anonymity of the VAR independent review panel members who make decisions behind closed doors on video clips? Why are they shielded from public knowledge?” He further added, “We advocate for transparency. Whenever decisions go against you, a storm erupts. So, why are these individuals allowed to remain anonymous while exerting influence behind the scenes? They should be identified. We are accountable for our opinions; they should be too. People influencing Scottish football from the shadows without revealing themselves is inappropriate. They must be named. We speak our minds openly; they should do the same. There are people shaping the game from within, unknown to the public. They’re not doing it without compensation.”
Boyd highlighted the impact on fans, stating, “Players and managers understand the realities, but the fans are left in the dark. Fans may perceive their teams as unjustly treated based on bias toward Rangers or Celtic. As pundits, we take responsibility. I’ll face criticism when I leave here. The panel members influence the on-field officials who face the wrath of fans believing their team is unfairly treated. It’s unjust.”
Discussing the intricacies of VAR decisions, Boyd remarked, “Offside calls are clear-cut, while other instances are debatable. But if it’s up for debate, it can’t be blatantly obvious as advertised by VAR’s introduction to adjudicate on clear and obvious errors. Missing a goal-line handball is understandable, but some referrals for minor incidents are unnecessary. Imagine paying for tickets, only to endure lengthy VAR reviews for minutes on end.”
Criticizing the lack of top-tier officials, Boyd questioned, “We have full-time VAR referees, but their effectiveness is questionable. Where are they when needed for critical matches? Elite officials are imperative for high-stakes games. The current setup falls short. Enhanced officiating is essential both on-field and in the VAR hub. The status quo is unacceptable.”
