‘Shocking’ – Rangers vs Kilmarnock VAR debacle ripped apart by BBC Pundit

During yesterday’s match between Rangers and Kilmarnock, one of the VAR decisions regarding a handball incident has sparked controversy, with many calling it a ‘mess’.

Michael Stewart expressed disbelief over VAR advising on-field referee David Dickinson to review an incident involving Corrie Ndaba using the pitchside monitor at Ibrox.

The incident occurred early in the game when the Killie defender challenged Dujon Sterling inside the box. The ball spun into the air and lightly brushed Ndaba’s arm from close range.

Although the packed home crowd and Rangers players vocally called for a penalty, Dickinson seemed unconvinced and did not take immediate action.

After a brief pause in the game, VAR intervened and instructed Dickinson to personally reassess the incident using the monitor. Despite the pressure, Dickinson maintained his initial decision, leading to the game continuing without a penalty for Rangers.

Stewart criticized the handling of the situation, stating that it underscored the inherent flaws of VAR and the unnecessary delay it caused.

He remarked on Sportscene, “Credit should be given to David Dickinson for holding his ground. The VAR officials’ actions disrupted the flow of the game needlessly. It was clear to everyone involved in football within seconds that it was not a penalty kick.”

Cammy Bell supported the decision, emphasizing that the incident did not warrant a penalty and should have been resolved promptly without VAR intervention.

Bell explained, “It’s evident that there was no intent involved in the handball. The contact did not affect the natural progression of play. I was surprised when Dickinson was asked to review it. The referee deserves praise for standing by his original call.”
