Although the 26-year-old was fit to play, he remained benched as Tom Lawrence got the nod against the champions. Rangers’ manager Clement explained that despite Cantwell’s availability, it wasn’t deemed the right time to introduce him following John Lundstram’s early dismissal.

Prior to the start of the Premiership season, Cantwell had shared a photo on Instagram with Michael Beale, accompanied by the caption: “Let’s fight for everything.” Sharp-eyed followers noticed a discreetly added number 56 on Cantwell’s shorts, alluding to Rangers’ pursuit of a forthcoming title.
Following Celtic’s derby victory that all but secured their third consecutive win, fans took to social media to jest about Cantwell’s absence from the game. One supporter humorously remarked: “The budgie never even got let out the cage today,” while another quipped: “Thought he played brilliant today.
