The aftermath of every Glasgow Derby inevitably sparks the timeless debate: Which team boasts the superior players, Celtic or Rangers?

Typically, the season’s final league standings provide a clear verdict, with the team finishing atop the Scottish Premiership regarded as having the better players and team overall.

This season, however, witnessed a shift in dynamics as Rangers claimed the top spot for a brief period in March, throwing the usual narrative into disarray.

Prior to Celtic’s clash with Rangers, a lively discussion unfolded on BBC Sportsound regarding which players from Philippe Clement’s squad could make their mark in Rodgers’ team. Former players Pat Bonner and Michael Stewart reached an intriguing consensus, singling out just one standout individual.

Amid deliberations about potential summer reinforcements for Celtic in key positions such as left-back, central defense, wingers, and striker, the focus shifted to Rangers players who could enhance Rodgers’ squad. Stewart and Bonner unanimously highlighted one Ibrox player who could significantly improve Celtic’s setup.

In a statement on BBC Radio Scotland, Stewart proposed, “Potentially, and the reason I was putting one up was the goalie [Jack Butland]. He’s a potential.”

The sentiment was echoed by former Celtic favorite Bonner, who acknowledged Rodgers’ team’s vulnerabilities but identified Butland as the sole standout candidate for reinforcement.

Bonner explained, “Celtic’s back line, maybe sometimes you might question because Hearts created opportunities last week, but they’re all decent players. Joe Hart’s had a good season. Listen, guys, Jack Butland, probably if you were after a goalkeeper right now to replace Joe Hart and he was available, he would be one that you would take.”

Indeed, Butland’s commendable goalkeeping skills were on full display, preventing Celtic from taking a more commanding lead during their recent encounter. Given Butland’s impressive performances, Rangers could face a challenge retaining him during the upcoming transfer window.

Regrettably, due to Butland’s current status and standing within the England setup, Celtic may find it unattainable to secure his services in the foreseeable future.
