Michael Stewart is of the opinion that Rangers face a daunting task in the upcoming summer transfer window as they attempt to close the gap on Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

Following a commanding 5-0 victory over Kilmarnock on Wednesday, Rangers were ultimately pipped to the title by Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic. Looking ahead to the approaching transfer window, Stewart shared his thoughts on BBC Sportsound, emphasizing the challenges ahead for Philippe Clement and his team.

Stewart remarked, “Rangers have a significant summer ahead, irrespective of Celtic’s moves. They face a considerable rebuilding task to address past recruitment disappointments. The onus is on Rangers to make astute decisions in the market, especially with Celtic looking to strengthen. The room for error is minimal if Rangers intend to bridge the gap successfully.”

As the transfer season looms, Rangers are bracing for defensive shake-ups, with various players potentially departing due to contract situations or transfer speculations. The likes of Leon Balogun, Ben Davies, Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, and John Lundstram could be on the move, posing a challenge for Clement to bolster the defensive ranks adequately.

The prospect of multiple departures necessitates the urgent acquisition of quality defensive additions, a task made more challenging by financial constraints at Ibrox. Despite the narrow gap with Celtic, key losses and shortcomings must be addressed through strategic signings to reinforce the squad for the upcoming season.

By making shrewd signings to revitalize the team, Rangers aim to position themselves more competitively next season and potentially alter the narrative with a stronger squad in place.
