Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and potentially Leeds United are poised to exert significant influence on the upcoming Premier League vote to potentially scrap VAR this summer. Sources close to Football Insider have indicated that the decision is expected to be a tight one, likely going down to the wire.
The traditional ‘Big Six’ clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham, were instrumental in pushing for the introduction of VAR at the start of the 2019-20 season and are anticipated to maintain their support for the technology.
The decision to vote on the future of VAR was triggered by Wolves, who formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League. All 20 member clubs will reveal their positions on the matter during the annual general meeting scheduled for 6th June.
A reliable source within the Premier League informed Football Insider that the ultimate outcome of the vote could hinge on the stance of the newly-promoted teams, with Leicester City and Ipswich Town already confirming their positions, as the third vote is set between Leeds United and the victor of the Friday semi-final clash between West Brom and Southampton.
For any proposed rule modifications to be approved, at least 14 clubs must vote in favor of the motion.
In their statement, Wolves expressed concerns about the unintended negative consequences of VAR, which have strained the relationship between fans and the sport, despite its initial implementation in good faith to aid on-field officials in making correct decisions and reviewing clear and obvious errors.
Though the Premier League has acknowledged the criticisms surrounding VAR, the league administration remains in full support of the technology and aims to collaborate with the PGMOL to enhance its effectiveness.
Wolves currently stand alone as the only club openly declaring their intent to vote for the removal of VAR in the impending vote next month.
Notably, Premier League clubs recently voted in favor of introducing semi-automated offsides from the 2024-25 season onwards. However, if pre-VAR officiating is reinstated next season in the top flight, these plans could also be abandoned.
