Former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt recently disclosed that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy made an attempt to secure his signature before he joined Liverpool.

Liverpool has managed to outmaneuver Tottenham in key signings in recent times, the latest being Luis Diaz. Despite Tottenham’s efforts to sign the Colombian winger from FC Porto in January 2022, Liverpool managed to secure his services.

Interestingly, it seems Liverpool had also beaten Tottenham to the signing of Dirk Kuyt almost two decades ago. Kuyt, who signed for Liverpool in 2006 from Feyenoord, revealed that he had the opportunity to move to Tottenham a year prior but opted to stay at Feyenoord due to the odd timing of the transfer deadline and concerns about leaving his former club without a recognized striker.

Reflecting on the past, Kuyt shared in a recent podcast interview his decision not to join Tottenham despite interest from Daniel Levy. He highlighted the importance of loyalty to Feyenoord and the timing of the potential move, which ultimately influenced his choice to stay.

During his time at Liverpool, Kuyt became revered for his work rate and determination, earning praise despite not being the most technically skilled forward. In his 285 appearances for the Reds, he scored 71 goals and provided 41 assists, contributing significantly to the team’s success, including winning the League Cup in 2012 before moving to Fenerbahce.

Interestingly, if Kuyt had chosen Tottenham over Liverpool, he would have ended up with the same number of trophies, given Tottenham’s last major trophy win being the League Cup in 2008 under Juande Ramos.
