Coventry City have bid adieu to yet another promising young talent from their development squad, despite high hopes of integrating him into the senior team. Reports from CoventryLive indicate that the Sky Blues have amicably terminated the contract of Evan Eghosa, an attacking midfielder and winger, who has now found a new home with Floridsdorf Athletic Club in the Austrian second division.
The 18-year-old inked his maiden professional contract with the Championship outfit last year, originally set to extend until July 2025. However, this agreement has been prematurely cut short by a year.
Earlier in May, City had already bid farewell to fellow Under-21 prospects Dermi Lusala and Bradley Stretton, both of whom were listed in the club’s released roster of retained players. Following suit, Marco Rus, another burgeoning talent from the development squad, departed for Ayr United, sealing a move to the Scottish Championship in a deal undisclosed to the public.
Signs of Eghosa’s impending exit became apparent when he was granted the opportunity to trial at Norwich City and later featured in their development team’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa as a second-half substitute.
Taking his talents overseas, the young player has now joined Floridsdorf Athletic Club. In a statement over the weekend, the Austrian Liga 2 side announced: “The former Austrian U17 national team player is transitioning from Coventry City’s youth setup to our team at Hopfengasse, signing a contract until 2026 with the option to extend for an additional year.”
FAC Sport Director Lukas Fischer expressed enthusiasm over Eghosa’s arrival, citing his remarkable skills honed in England. Fischer emphasized the club’s commitment to supporting the player’s career progression and providing a platform for his growth.
In response to his move, Eghosa shared his excitement for the new chapter, stating, “I’m grateful for the opportunity that FAC has presented to me. Their dedication was a key factor in my decision to join Floridsdorf. I am eager to showcase my abilities in Austria and contribute my best to the team in the upcoming season.”
The departure of this promising forward, who had shown significant development during his time at Coventry City, marks a shift in his career trajectory. Having risen through the ranks over the past three seasons and impressed coaches at both youth and senior levels, Eghosa now embarks on a new adventure with Floridsdorf Athletic Club.
After participating in pre-season and appearing in three senior friendly matches against Forest Green, Shrewsbury Town, and MK Dons, he was awarded a two-year deal a month later. Reflecting on this opportunity, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am thrilled and immensely thankful. This journey has been incredible, and I owe a great deal to my faith for guiding me through. Additionally, he highlighted the valuable experience gained from training with the first team, emphasizing how it motivated him to strive for excellence. He praised the first-team coaches for their guidance and support, acknowledging the positive impact on his development. Looking ahead to the 2023/24 season, he outlined his ambition to transition to the first team, aiming to impress the manager and further enhance his skills.
