Oxford United are on the verge of outmaneuvering Barnsley and Derby County to secure the signing of Idris El Mizouni from Ipswich Town.

According to TWTD, the U’s are nearing a permanent deal for the Tunisian midfielder. Ipswich Town recently exercised an option to extend El Mizouni’s contract for another year, presumably to facilitate a profitable transfer of the 23-year-old talent, who has spent the past two seasons impressively on loan at Leyton Orient.

Both Barnsley and Derby County had shown interest in the former Cambridge United loanee, but it seems the League One playoff champions, Oxford United, are set to clinch his signature.

El Mizouni debuted for Ipswich Town in 2019 but has struggled to secure a regular first-team spot, experiencing five loan spells over the past four years. After two periods at Cambridge United, he spent six months with Grimsby Town during the 2020/21 season before solidifying his role at Leyton Orient.

During his initial loan spell in the 2022/23 season, El Mizouni was instrumental in Leyton Orient’s League Two title triumph under Richie Wellens, featuring in 41 matches. Following his successful stint, he returned to Leyton Orient the following season, excelling in League One with consistent, commanding performances in midfield.

Overall, El Mizouni made 89 appearances for Leyton Orient, far exceeding the 26 matches he played for Ipswich Town.

El Mizouni showcased his defensive prowess in the previous season, averaging 1.8 successful tackles and 1.2 interceptions per 90, ranking him among the top 20 players in these categories. Oxford United gears up for their EFL Championship return under the relentless efforts of Des Buckingham. The U’s recent signings, including El Mizouni, mark a strategic rebuild for the club.
