Paul Warne has shed light on why securing one of Derby County’s standout talents was an easy decision for the club.

With the new Championship season approaching, Derby County is finalizing preparations for their opening match against Blackburn Rovers. Warne mentioned the club’s goal of signing 12 new players following the release of six players in early June. So far, the club has welcomed four new players to Pride Park, with the acquisition of Ebou Adams expected soon.

This summer, Derby has made some strategic moves, including signing the versatile Ben Osborn, who featured in 24 Premier League games last season. Additionally, the loan of striker Jerry Yates, who netted nine goals in the 2023/24 Championship, is poised to strengthen the attack alongside Kayden Jackson.

However, it is the signing of Kenzo Goudmijn that Warne considers a ‘no-brainer.’ Last week, Derby secured the 22-year-old Dutch midfielder from AZ Alkmaar for £600,000. Goudmijn expressed his eagerness to play in England and showcased his talent during a 30-minute appearance in a 3-0 friendly win over Matlock Town.

Goudmijn, primarily a deep-lying midfielder or number 10, impressed fans with his set-piece abilities in the friendly. Warne’s decision to sign him was influenced by the midfielder’s experience in the Eredivisie and the affordability of the transfer compared to the English market.

Warne explained to BBC Sport, “The English market is extremely expensive, and we needed to look abroad to find the type of player we wanted at a reasonable price. Ten weeks ago, we were told it would cost an exorbitant amount, but persistence paid off, and we secured him for £600k, which feels like a bargain compared to the English market.”

Goudmijn brings much-needed creativity to Derby. Last season, the Rams excelled in set-pieces, scoring 25 goals from such situations. With previous set-piece specialists like Conor Hourihane, Louie Sibley, and Max Bird having moved on, Goudmijn’s left foot could be pivotal.

Beyond set-pieces, Goudmijn offers exceptional creativity from central and wide positions, finding space and delivering crosses. Derby previously lacked a player with his ability to unlock defenses, a quality that will be crucial in the Championship.

Last season, Goudmijn created seven significant chances and averaged one key pass per game in the Eredivisie. If he can replicate that performance in the Championship, Derby will have a truly ‘exceptional’ player on their hands.
