Edwards Aims for High-Scoring Season in Championship Return

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has promised an exciting and attacking style of play as his team aims for an immediate return to the Premier League this season. Despite a challenging campaign that saw Luton relegated with only six wins and 26 points, they managed to score against every team in the top flight, showcasing their offensive potential.

Strikers Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo, who both reached double figures in goals last season, have attracted interest in the transfer market but remain with the club, expected to lead the charge for promotion. Additionally, Cauley Woodrow and the nearly fit Jacob Brown add depth to Luton’s offensive lineup. Players like Tahith Chong, who had a strong second half last season, and Chiedozie Ogbene, a dynamic presence on the right, further bolster their attacking options. Joe Taylor, prolific in lower leagues, might also see some game time.

In their last Championship stint, Luton secured promotion via the play-offs, often winning by narrow margins, particularly after Edwards took over in November 2022. They scored 57 goals that season, slightly more than the 52 they managed against tougher Premier League opposition.

Edwards aims to replicate their previous success but with a more attacking approach. “I want us to play exciting, quick, and aggressive football,” he said. “We saw a lot of that last year, and this year, I want us to win games with that style. It’s an exciting time for the club, and we know we can do it because we’ve done it before.”

Edwards acknowledged the heightened expectations this season but believes his squad, strengthened by their Premier League experience, can handle the pressure. “There will be more expectation, and we’ll have to handle that,” he stated. “The last time we were in this league, we got promoted, and I feel we’re in a stronger position now. I want us to compete and deliver in a fun way.”

He emphasized the importance of entertaining football for the fans. “I want the stadium to be bouncing. I want the fans to love watching us, to be exciting to watch, and to score goals. We got 52 goals in the Premier League last year and 57 the year before in the Championship. We aim to score a lot this year.”

As Luton prepares for the new season, currently training in Slovenia and playing friendlies, Edwards is optimistic. “It’s been a really positive couple of weeks. The lads have come in with a positive mindset, which fills me with confidence. I’m really looking forward to the season starting next week.”
