The future of one of Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer targets remains uncertain.

As they prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 Championship season, Sheffield Wednesday is currently taking a brief hiatus from transfer activities. The Owls’ first-team squad is in Germany for a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen on Friday. This follows a recent 4-0 defeat against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, marking their second pre-season match.

After facing Bremen, Sheffield Wednesday will play against Leganes in Liam Palmer’s testimonial before opening the new campaign at home against Plymouth Argyle. There is anticipation that the Owls will further strengthen their squad, adding to their nine summer signings so far.

The club is making efforts to secure Ike Ugbo from Troyes on a permanent deal, but negotiations have hit some roadblocks. Additionally, Sheffield Wednesday has submitted a bid for former Celtic prodigy Karamoko Dembele, who is currently with Ligue 1 club Brest, where his future is in question.

Dembele, 21, has been informed he can leave Brest this summer, despite his impressive loan spell at Blackpool in League One during the 2023/24 season and being under contract until 2026. Sheffield Wednesday is among several clubs, including Derby County and Portsmouth, that have expressed interest in Dembele. However, Portsmouth’s manager, John Mousinho, has downplayed the speculation surrounding his club’s bid.

Recently, Dembele posted an Instagram photo showing his pre-season preparations with Brest, captioned “Preparations continue,” suggesting Brest might reconsider their stance on the player. Given his strong performance at Blackpool, Dembele could serve as a valuable backup for Brest, especially as they compete in the Champions League next season—a prospect that could be appealing to him.

While there is significant interest from the Championship, Dembele’s move to Sheffield Wednesday might be a development that unfolds later in the summer transfer window, if it happens at all.
