The 21-year-old midfielder, who impressed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at Doncaster Rovers last season, was initially linked with a potential move to Sheffield Wednesday as he aimed to progress in English football.

However, it has now been confirmed that he will remain in South Yorkshire but play in League One. Barnsley announced on Monday that they have secured him on a season-long loan as they aim for a return to the Championship. The midfielder has expressed his satisfaction with the move, saying, “It’s been really good so far. I’ve looked around the ground – which is beautiful – a really good stadium. The people I have talked to already have been really welcoming, it’s been good,” he told the club’s official website.

Barnsley’s Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz, added, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Matty to Oakwell. He is a young player who will provide a different option in the midfield with his ability to regain possession and physicality. We are happy to have him join the squad to provide competition and thank Spurs for trusting us with a talent like Matty.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have also been active this summer as Danny Röhl prepares them for the 2024/25 season, with rising expectations. The club is expected to bring in more new signings before the transfer window closes.
