Sheffield Wednesday expressed interest in signing former Leeds United forward Ian Poveda this summer, but it seems he is set to join another Championship club.

A leaked image on social media appears to end speculation surrounding Poveda’s potential move to Sheffield Wednesday as the team continues its preseason in Germany.

Poveda, 24, made 10 appearances on loan with Wednesday last season after a deadline day transfer from Leeds United. Although he made a notable impact, his time at the club was marred by hamstring issues. Earlier this week, Wednesday manager Danny Röhl indicated that the club was not close to finalizing an agreement with the Colombian international, despite entering formal talks weeks ago. Poveda, now a free agent after leaving Leeds at the end of his contract, has naturally attracted significant interest. Röhl mentioned difficulties on the ‘player and agent’ side as the reason negotiations stalled.

Interest in Poveda from Sunderland has grown this week, and now a social media image seemingly confirms his move to the North East club. The image, posted on Wednesday morning, shows Poveda posing for unveiling photos outside Sunderland’s Academy of Light training ground, dressed in a Sunderland shirt and holding a red and white scarf.

Röhl commented on Poveda’s situation earlier this week, stating, “On the one side we have interest from the club and what we want to do, but then there is the player’s side and the agent’s side. There must be a match, and maybe there are some things that are not a match, so it is different. In my mind, Ian Poveda is not under contract. We will see in the end where he is and what we can do, but it must be a decision together.”

Sheffield Wednesday has been active in the transfer market, bringing in nine players so far, including attacking talents Jamal Lowe, Olaf Kobacki, and Charlie McNeill.
