ROHL ON THE BRINK OF A MAJOR DECISION FOLLOWING STUNNING SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY DISPLAY AGAINST BREMEN

July 27, 2024

Sheffield Wednesday managed a 2-2 draw against Bundesliga side Werder Bremen during their pre-season preparations.

Danny Rohl’s focus is on ensuring his squad is fit and ready for the 2024/25 Championship season, bolstered by several key signings. The Owls began their pre-season campaign with a win over Alfreton Town, thanks to goals from Josh Windass and Mallik Wilks, but they were defeated in a closed-door friendly against Champions League team RB Salzburg.

Rohl has aimed to challenge his team with tough opponents, and Werder Bremen proved to be a formidable test. Sheffield Wednesday found themselves 2-0 down by the 47th minute but fought back to secure a 2-2 draw.

One standout performer for Rohl’s side was Djeidi Gassama, who scored the equalizing goal against Werder Bremen, suggesting he could be pivotal in Rohl’s plans. Gassama’s performance indicates his potential to be a key player in Sheffield Wednesday’s attack.

Gassama’s goal complemented Anthony Musaba’s earlier strike for the Owls. The former French U20 international is looking to build on a mixed 2023/24 season, where he netted three goals in 35 league games. Gassama’s playing time increased after Rohl replaced former boss Xisco Munoz, and he proved crucial in key moments, such as the 2-0 away win at Queens Park Rangers.

Rohl faces a significant decision regarding who will start at left-wing for Sheffield Wednesday. While the friendly against Alfreton Town was primarily about getting players match-fit, promising performances came from Wilks and new signing Olaf Kobacki, who contributed a goal and an assist, respectively.

However, Wilks’ injury history may hinder his chances of being Rohl’s starting winger this season. Kobacki has shown promise since joining, indicating his potential to contribute significantly at this level. Despite this, Gassama’s familiarity with the squad and his pre-season form might earn him the starting spot against Plymouth Argyle in the opening game of the Championship season.

Overall, Gassama’s pre-season performances suggest he deserves the opportunity to prove his capability and play a key role for Rohl in the upcoming campaign.
