Brighton Engage in Discussions with Celtic for Acquisition of Matt O’Riley
Reports from Sky Sports indicate that Brighton is currently in negotiations with Celtic regarding the potential signing of midfielder Matt O’Riley. Despite strong interest from Southampton and Atalanta, none of those discussions have yet reached the ‘in talks’ stage.
Although Brighton may not seem like the most glamorous destination for O’Riley, the club has garnered a reputation for being well-managed and is known for its robust scouting and recruitment system, which has supplied talent to top clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
The latest update from Sky Sports reveals that Chelsea, along with several other clubs, are keen on acquiring O’Riley. The player has attracted attention from Atalanta this transfer window, as well as from various Premier League and overseas clubs.
In a recent report, Sky Sports News mentioned that O’Riley is being considered by Chelsea as a potential replacement for Conor Gallagher, in case Gallagher finalizes his move to Atletico Madrid. If the two clubs can agree on a fee, the final decision rests with O’Riley, who is well aware of Brighton’s standing in the game after spending ten years in the Fulham Academy.
Celtic may be willing to entertain a deal with Brighton, but they are likely to push for more than the customary 10% add-on to the transfer fee.
A recent financial update by ESPN showcased Brighton’s profitable performance, with a significant income of £122.8m for the year ending 30th June 2023. Notably, this figure was largely driven by lucrative outgoing transfers of key players like Yves Bissouma (to Tottenham Hotspur), Marc Cucurella (to Chelsea), Leandro Trossard (to Arsenal), and Alexis Mac Allister (to Liverpool). Brighton also pocketed around £21m in compensation when manager Graham Potter departed for Chelsea.
Last September, O’Riley extended his contract with Celtic, committing to the club until May 2027.
