Paul Warne rued the lack of offensive threat as Derby County suffered a disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup, losing in a penalty shootout to Barrow.

In a tense encounter that ended goalless after regular time, misses from James Collins, Kayden Jackson, and Craig Forsyth condemned the Championship side to a 3-2 defeat on penalties against the League Two outfit.

Both teams had their opportunities to break the deadlock, with Kian Spence hitting the woodwork for Barrow and Kayden Jackson doing the same for Derby. Despite the efforts from Derby, coach Warne acknowledged that their inability to create significant danger in front of goal was decisive.

Reflecting on the match, Warne expressed, “We lacked a genuine threat in the first half. We had a fantastic chance with Tom, but we failed to capitalize on it. Overall, our attacking play was inadequate.”

Describing the contest as a typical cup clash, Warne acknowledged the resilience of the opponent, praising Barrow’s recent form following a convincing 4-0 victory in their previous game.

Although injuries forced some alterations to the line-up, Warne pointed out the team’s shortcomings in the final third, emphasizing the importance of converting key moments. He concluded, “We fell short in delivering the crucial passes that could have secured us the win. To succeed, we needed our attacking decisions to be sharper. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough to claim victory, nor did we do enough to avoid defeat.”
