Chris Mepham’s decision to join Sunderland on deadline day has been uncovered in the media.

Sunderland successfully secured the loan signing of Mepham until the conclusion of the 2024-25 season on the final day of the transfer window. The Black Cats acted swiftly following Aji Alese’s injury in training the previous week, prompting the 26-year-old to opt for a move to Wearside amidst interest from other Championship clubs. According to reports from The Sun, Mepham chose Sunderland to enhance his chances of representing Wales once again. Having not featured in Bournemouth’s first two Premier League matches, he feared that Wales’ new manager, Craig Bellamy, might look elsewhere for regular playing time.

Although Mepham will miss Wales’ Nations League clash against Turkey due to suspension, he remains available for the upcoming game against Montenegro later in the international break starting next Monday after this weekend’s club fixtures.
