This time, the sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, secured four valuable additions without spending a penny. Ian Poveda, Alan Browne, Simon Moore, and Blondy Nna Noukeu all joined the squad on free transfers.
Among them, Alan Browne has stood out, although he’s currently sidelined due to a minor knee injury for the upcoming match against Middlesbrough. Meanwhile, Poveda has yet to showcase his skills on the field, largely due to the surplus of attacking options available to manager Regis Le Bris.
Rumors spread recently about Sunderland signing a free agent striker to bolster their squad, as there still remains a gap in the striker department. However, dispelling the speculation, journalist James Copley clarified that the talks about Aaron Connolly joining Sunderland were unfounded.
While another striker could have been beneficial, especially considering injuries and lack of experience in the squad, the decision not to pursue Connolly signals that clubs may have concerns over his injury history. Despite his proven track record and age, Connolly’s future remains uncertain as he aims to secure a place in the Championship, potentially facing Sunderland in the coming season.
