Rangers outmaneuvered Celtic in the race for the league title during the disruptive COVID-19 season. Renowned commentator Clive Tyldesley, hired by Rangers TV to voice matches that unfolded in empty stadiums, received intriguing messages from Rangers supporters each time he referenced Celtic during the broadcasts.

Tyldesley’s distinctive voice became synonymous with Rangers’ triumphant campaign in the unique 2020/21 season where they clinched the Premiership trophy and halted Celtic’s pursuit of a historic 10-in-a-row. He recalled, “Rangers sought my services eagerly, offering free coverage of home games to season ticket holders until they could return to the grounds. Fortunately, every match I commented on ended in a Rangers victory, contributing to a memorable season.”

Describing his interactions with Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, Tyldesley shared, “I would meet Steven before games, masks on and maintaining social distance. Communicating became a challenge with the mask muffling his Scouse accent. I’d return to the commentary booth unsure of player updates, often relaying doubtful information like, ‘I think he said James Tavernier is playing at center-back?'”

Reflecting on his time covering Glasgow football, Tyldesley admitted, “The experience turned out to be an enlightening 18-month journey as I discovered gaps in my knowledge of the football scene. During one of the broadcasts, while discussing a Celtic match alongside a Rangers game, I inadvertently referred to Celtic as ‘The Hoops are now three up,’ provoking a flood of messages from Rangers fans cautioning me against using affectionate terms for their rivals.”

From that point on, Tyldesley heeded the fans’ warning and addressed Celtic as ‘Celtic’ without any endearing monikers, respecting the fierce rivalry cherished by the supporters.
