In preparation for Leeds United’s Championship showdown against Coventry City, the officiating crew has been finalized, featuring referee Gavin Ward for his second appearance at Elland Road this season.

Ward, hailing from Surrey, last oversaw Leeds’ triumphant 2-0 victory over Hull City, where goals from Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe secured the win for the West Yorkshire side. While the match at Elland Road was devoid of major controversies, there were plenty of frustrating calls that tested both teams.

The referee has had a notably eventful start to the season, displaying a more active red-card tally of three in five games than any other Championship official. Additionally, Ward has shown 18 yellow cards during this span. However, his recent decision to send off Di’Shon Bernard during Sheffield Wednesday’s clash with Luton Town stirred controversy.

During the match, Ward controversially pointed to the spot after Bernard appeared to block a shot with his shoulder, resulting in a penalty for Luton. Despite replays confirming a legal shoulder contact, the Owls were reduced to 10 men, allowing Carlton Morris to score the tying and winning goals.

The contentious call drew criticism from Wednesday’s fans, players, and head coach Danny Rohl, who lamented the impact of such decisions on the natural flow of the game.
