Wolves boss Gary O’Neil expressed deep disappointment following what he deemed the “most subpar performance” during his tenure at the club, following a 5-3 loss to Brentford.
The defeat, which places Wolves at the bottom of the Premier League standings without a victory, was made more disheartening by the team’s apparent breakdown on the field.
O’Neil bemoaned the lack of structure, stating, “There was utter chaos, a complete lack of direction on what the team should be doing and where they should be positioned. This is the poorest showing I’ve witnessed from this group since my arrival here.”
Reflecting on the impact of conceding an early goal, he remarked, “The early setback possibly rattled them. But our defense was too porous, lacking cohesion. We never stood a chance due to our defensive disarray. Even in possession, our organization was in shambles.”
Closing with a sense of astonishment, O’Neil declared, “This is a shock. This level of performance is uncharacteristic of them.”
The match saw a brisk start, with Brentford narrowly missing out on their trend of early goals, as Nathan Collins netted after just a minute and 15 seconds, setting Wolves up for a heavy defeat.
Wolves’ defensive vulnerabilities were glaring in a 3-2 loss against Brentford, with Matheus Cunha temporarily balancing the scales early on. However, the team’s hopes were short-lived as Bryan Mbeumo converted a penalty, outdoing all other Premier League scorers this season except Erling Haaland of Manchester City, following Mario Lemina’s foul in the box.
Despite a spirited fightback capped by Jorgen Strand Larsen’s equalizer, Wolves’ defense faltered, conceding to Christian Norgaard and Ethan Pinnock. Late goals from both sides added to the spectacle but failed to alter the final outcome.

On the opposite side, Brentford’s manager Thomas Frank lauded his team’s resilience and diligence, mentioning with a touch of humor, “We’ve been having a laugh about it,” and disclosing their practice of coin tosses during training.
Frank commended his squad’s strong mentality, noting, “It took a bit longer this time, but jokes aside, it’s exceptional.”
