In the aftermath of Manchester City’s contentious injury-time victory over Wolves at Molineux, manager Gary O’Neil expressed his feelings towards the match-winning goal by Pep Guardiola’s team.
The decisive goal, scored by John Stones in the dying moments, sparked controversy as it was initially disallowed by referee Chris Kavanaugh due to Bernardo Silva’s supposed interference with Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa from an offside position. However, a VAR review overturned the decision after confirming that there was no obstruction to Sa’s line of sight. O’Neil later admitted to Sky Sports that he harbored doubts about the outcome while Kavanaugh consulted the pitchside monitor, citing past experiences where similar situations did not favor his team.
Reflecting on a similar disallowed goal against West Ham in the previous season, O’Neil refrained from offering excuses and emphasized the need to accept the referee’s decisions with respect. Despite the disappointment of leaving empty-handed, O’Neil commended his players for their exceptional effort and acknowledged the challenges they faced.
Looking ahead, Wolves, who have encountered struggles in the current season with seven losses and a solitary draw, will confront Brighton in their upcoming match on October 26.
