West Bromwich Albion’s manager, Carlos Corberan, acknowledged that his team’s lead at halftime was undeserved in their 1-1 draw against Luton, extending their winless streak in the Sky Bet Championship to seven matches.
It was a lackluster first half until Josh Maja scored a late goal with a back-heel from Karlan Grant’s assist, making it his eighth goal of the season. However, Tahith Chong equalized for Luton in the 60th minute, resulting in a shared outcome.
Corberan admitted, “We didn’t deserve to be in the lead in the first half as Luton outplayed us. Our only chance resulted in a goal. We failed to showcase our style of play. Overall, our performance was not up to par. We were lacking in one or two passes.”
Reflecting on his team’s display further, he noted, “We played it safe, did not exhibit our team’s quality, and failed to assert our style of play.” Despite acknowledging the draw and their recent struggles after a promising start to the season, Corberan stressed the importance of maintaining confidence, stating, “While we always aim to win, a draw is better than a loss. After a string of winless games, we need to work on regaining our winning mentality without losing confidence.”
The Baggies have now drawn five consecutive matches, leaving them seven points behind league leaders Sunderland, who have played one game less.
Luton’s manager, Rob Edwards, expressed frustration over his team not creating as many chances as usual and failing to showcase their quality, especially in the attacking third. He praised Tahith Chong, highlighting the former Manchester United academy graduate’s impressive solo goal that secured a point for Luton following back-to-back defeats against Sunderland and Coventry.
“Chong was exceptional. We are aware of his abilities, and his goal tonight showcased his quality. We encourage him to have confidence and freedom in those situations,” Edwards remarked.
