Burnley’s dreams of promotion back to the premiership were dealt a major blow on Tuesday when they played a one-all draw against Derby County at home Turf Moor. While the Clarets arguably deserved the three points based on their superior ball possession and increased chances created they were unfortunately denied by a solid Rams defense.
Fulham head coach Scott Parker could only lament his side’s inability to finish as he said his team was naive in front of goal. ‘We are devastated, honestly,’ Parker said during the post-match interview. ‘We arrived here with one intention – to win the match – and we just missed it,’ said the coach.
Parker who was fuming after the game believed his men let slip several good opportunities of getting the full six points. “We had some good opportunities in the first half when the game was open,” he said. “You get a goal then, and maybe the game looks a little bit different.”
The Burnley boss also agreed to the fact that the team’s pressure has increased as the game progressed, and some ill-fated decisions were made. ‘The longer the game lasts, the tension around the stadium was reflected in that on the pitch for us,’ said Parker. They say that “Out of sheer need, we begin making bad choices.”
As for Derby County, they will get some consolation from a good defensive showing that ensured they picked up a point away from home. Stoke manager Paul Warne had effected changes before the start of the match putting penchant changes on the 3-5-2 formation that gave Rams some nice moments.
With the Championship fixtures fixing scenario changing frequently, the match between Burnley and Derby has resulted in the toughening up of the promotion problems for Burnley. Having three teams on the same points, Parker’s men will be expected to come back to winning ways in the few matches remaining in the season.
